NZES - SCBO 2026 Travel Awards

Aims

The purpose of SCBO Travel awards is to enable conference participation by SCBO student members who would not otherwise be able to attend. For the NZES-SCBO 2026 Conference, our travel awards are specifically targeted to encourage participation by Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or Pacific Islander students.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must identify as Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or Pacific Islander.

  • Applicants must be full-time postgraduate or undergraduate students currently enrolled at a tertiary educational institute, or have been enrolled at a tertiary educational institute in the last six months prior to the date of the conference.

  • Applicants must have their abstract accepted to present at the conference (poster or oral).

  • Applicants must be current members of the Society for Conservation Biology Oceania Section.

Awards

Awards will be made to support students’ travel to and attendance at the NZES - SCBO 2026 Conference, held 30 Nov - 4 Dec 2026 in Tamaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa.

Applicants may request:

  • Conference registration costs;

  • Accommodation (to be booked by SCBO); and

  • Flights (to be booked by SCBO).

Please ONLY apply for items that you are unable to secure funding for from alternative sources (e.g. your university).

Applications

To apply for an attendance support award, please fill out the application form.

Applications close 12 August 2026. Award recipients will be notified before the end of August, to enable timely travel arrangements.

Assessment

Applications for Travel Awards will be assessed by members of the SCBO Board of Directors. The number of awards made will be at the discretion of the Board, and will depend upon funding available, funds requested and the strength of applications.

Award Conditions

  • Travel and Attendance Support Awards will only be made to students presenting at NZES-SCBO 2026. To be eligible to apply, you must have submitted an abstract by 12 August 2026.

  • All students selected for a travel award must participate in the NZES-SCBO Student Day on Monday November 30th. The Student Day will comprise a series of skills-building workshop choices aimed at bolstering the communication and networking skills of participants and increasing the students’ confidence.

  • Funds from this award will only be used to cover registration, shared accommodation (bed in a dorm room), and/or flights to Auckland from a single departure/return city. No funds will be provided to recipients directly.

  • If selected for support for conference registration, this will be organised by SCBO prior to the early bird registration deadline and will include the conference dinner and Study Day fee.

  • If selected for support for accommodation, SCBO will arrange for accommodation in Auckland from November 29th - December 4th in shared dorm rooms. No other dates will be included and no alternative accommodation other than that selected by SCBO will be available.

  • If selected for support for flights, SCBO will arrange all flights through a travel agent.

  • No travel insurance will be included in travel organised by SCBO and awardees will need to source their own travel insurance as appropriate to their circumstances.
